===================================================

Triennial VIII was successfully run on Saturday 04-May-2002. Conditions were perfect: temperatures about 10deg. C at the start, rising to 18deg. C during the day, very light warm winds, gorgeous blue sky, relative humidity of about 50% at the start, falling to 25% during the day. The trail was nice and muddy from rains earlier in the week. The bright sun on the trees made the white blazes a bit difficult to see... as intended!

Of historical interest

Here is the Information Sheet and Entry form as a downloadable PDF file, and the Instructions to Captains as a PDF file or as an web page. Here are the age and gender handicaps.

Here are the terms of engagement in a nutshell:

  1. Teams of six runners; categories include open, female, male, mixed, atrocious, bestial, crazed, and undecided.
  2. On Saturday 04th May we ran three stages west to east, from Watkins Glen to Upper Buttermilk State Park, Ithaca; and three stages east to west, from Route 38 (between Harford and Dryden) to Upper Buttermilk State Park, Ithaca. This is the golden spike method.
  3. This is the entire trail as described in Maps M-15 through M-18 available from the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, and the spur trail from Lick Brook to Upper Buttermilk.
  4. Cross-country scoring system, six stages total, age and gender handicap start following the Virgil Mountain Half-Marathon guidelines. Older / female runners will start before the official start time, with an advantage depending on age and gender. Theoretically, everyone should have finished together on each leg ("simultaneous orgasm"), and especially at the finish, but as in other aspects of life, the ideal was rarely approximated, let alone achieved.

Don't forget our qualifying standards. Any of the following qualify you:

  1. Completion of any previous Triennial;
  2. Pre-run the section of the trail you will run on race day (provide date) -- sign the trail register!
  3. Completion of any FLRC 20k or longer trail race since Triennial VII (1999);
  4. Completion of trail races of comparable difficulty (only for non-local runners), please provide details.

In addition we require that you have a sense of humour and that you firmly believe that anything that happens to you, good or bad, is either your doing or your karma, but not ours!.
